Composition VII - Wassily Kandinsky

The first thing I see is chaos. Beautiful, colourful chaos.

This is one of those paintings where you have to stop and actually look. The longer you stare at it, the more shapes you start inventing for yourself, a bit like looking at clouds. I can see something that looks like a fish. Someone else will probably see something completely different.

There are so many colours, lines and little sections that you could spend an hour staring at different parts of it and still find something new.

It also feels like a great party piece. Put it in a living room and let your guests stare at it for ten minutes like they’re on acid.

Painted in 1913, Composition VII comes from Kandinsky’s early abstract period. He was one of the artists pushing painting away from representing real objects and toward colour, shape and emotion.
