Bridge (Sèvres) by Alexandra Exter

RM 62.22

This one is a little different from the kind of art I normally go for. The colours are much more mellow, but I really like the subtle blues and greens running through the sides.

It’s one of those paintings you can keep looking at and finding things in. There seems to be a tunnel underneath, something almost like a dome sitting on the hill, and shapes everywhere that never quite settle into one thing.

I especially like the lines. Everything overlaps and cuts into everything else in a way that feels like it should give me a headache, but somehow it’s gorgeous. There’s something weirdly satisfying about looking at it.

Painted around 1912, Bridge (Sèvres) comes from Alexandra Exter’s Cubist period, when she was breaking landscapes and buildings down into geometric shapes while still leaving enough of the original scene for you to piece it together yourself.
