At the Roulette Table in Monte Carlo - Edvard Munch
I can immediately imagine where I’d put this. A den, a darker living room, maybe a man cave.
The whole thing feels hazy and distorted. I can almost feel the cigarette and cigar smoke hanging in the room. The faces barely exist, mostly just beards, moustaches and a few rough features coming through the heavy brush strokes.
Even the roulette table seems to fade away into the painting, almost like it’s being pulled into a wave.
It feels less like looking at a room and more like remembering one after a very long night. A little drunk, a little smoky, almost dreamlike.
Munch painted it in 1892 after spending time in Monte Carlo and regularly visiting the casino. He was interested in the nervous atmosphere around the roulette table, everyone watching and waiting to see what the next spin would bring.
