Political Drama by Robert Delaunay

The first thing that hits me is the bullseye in the middle. It pulls your eye straight in and makes the whole painting feel like it’s moving in this distorted circular motion.

I love the colours. The purple and pink especially stand out to me, particularly around the man’s arm. The face of the woman also feels warped and broken up by all the shapes around it.

Apparently, the story behind the painting is pretty nasty. It was inspired by a real political scandal involving an attempted murder. Which is slightly ridiculous, because visually, I just think it looks beautiful.

It’s colourful, strange, energetic, and one of those pieces that gets more interesting the longer you look at it.

Painted in 1914, Political Drama comes from Delaunay’s Orphist period, also known as Orphic Cubism. The style grew out of Cubism but put much more emphasis on bright colour, geometric shapes and a sense of rhythm and movement.
